Albus Dumbledore is my favourite character from the Harry Potter series. Not because he is good, but because he is flawed. Severely flawed, even. He makes terrible mistakes throughout the series and sometimes find himself making impossible choices; always torn between the greater good and the sacrifice of others in order to achieve it.
He is such an interesting character. Endlessly fascinating, and very much at the core of the book series. Even though he doesn't necessarily have many lines, his words are those who echo the most throughout the pages. He has a way of saying exactly what we, and Harry, need to hear.
So, here are 10 of my favourite Dumbledore quotes. All incredibly beautiful, wise and thought-provoking.
“It is important to fight and fight again, and keep fighting, for only then can evil be kept at bay though never quite eradicated.”
While these words were about Voldemort, they can be transferred to almost any struggle in life. And Dumbledore speaks the truth, when he declares that evil may never be completely banished from our lives, but that we can keep it at bay.
“Let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.”
This is one of my favourite quotes. It is not the wisest thing Dumbledore has ever said, but I find the sentence to be beautifully structured. And it inspires and reminds me to look after adventures and opportunities everywhere I go.
“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
An often-quoted favourite. And with good reason. This quote is an important reminder to focus on the joys in life; to search for happiness, even when it seems that all happiness has disappeared.
“Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it.”
As an avid reader, an aspiring writer and an ardent admirer of words, this quote rings true. Words have the power to built worlds, create images and offer a route of escape into daydreams. And Dumbledore says it perfectly.
”For in dreams we enter a world that is entirely our own. Let them swim in the deepest ocean or glide over the highest cloud.”
Such a poetic quote. I love the phrasing of it. After all, isn't this the definition of dreams? A world that you create subconsciously, from your memories, thoughts, worries and hopes. A world entirely private and your own.
“The truth. It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution.”
So wisely said. Haven't we all been hurt by a truth, delivered without delicacy? While the truth is preferable to a lie, it must be handled carefully.
“The consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed.”
Have you ever wondered how a random occurrence have influenced your life? How many coincidences and impulses have led you to where you are today? This quote makes me think of how each action has its own consequences; and leads to entirely different outcomes.
“It is a curious thing but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well.”
Harry is a reluctant leader. He wouldn't have chosen his path for himself; but perhaps his reluctance is what makes him such a great leader. Humility is such an important quality.
“There are much more terrible things than physical injury.”
This is one of the wisest thing Dumbledore has ever said. For, indeed, there are things much worse than injury.
“There are all kinds of courage. It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”
Such a simple truth. And so important to remember that the best friends are those who will tell you when you've taken the wrong path. And whom you can encourage to be a better version of themselves. If they need to.
